Battle of Bentonville, NC (Civil War)

The Battle of Bentonville was the last full-scale action of the Civil War and the largest ever fought in North Carolina. Bentonville was the only major attempt to defeat the Union army as it marched through the Carolinas, led by Gen. William T. Sherman.

Battle of First Manassas/Bull Run (Civil War)

On July 21, 1861, the Union and Confederate armies clashed for the first time in the Civil War, on the fields of Manassas, Virginia, overlooking Bull Run. Heavy fighting swept away any notion of a quick war.

Battle of Fredericksburg (Civil War)

The Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, fought December 11-15, 1862, featured the first major opposed river crossing in American military history. Union and Confederate troops fought in the streets of Fredericksburg, the Civil War’s first urban combat.

Battle of San Pasqual (Mexican-American War)

On December 6-7, 1846, one of the most controversial battles of the Mexican-American War took place at what is now San Diego, CA. It was also one of the few military battles that involved the US Army, Marines, Navy and civilian volunteers.
