Personal Papers Collections

The USMC Archives has established a superb collection of Marine Corps personal papers collections including those of Marines ranked from Private on up. The collection includes personal papers of some of the most notable Marines in history.

Recognizing the educational and research value of this type of archival material, the Commandant of the Marine Corps directed the USMC History and Museums Division to transfer its personal papers collections, including the personal papers collections of all of the Marine Corps Commandants, to USMC Archives and Special Collections in October, 1998.

The USMC Archives openly welcomes civilian researchers. This and all other unclassified collections are available to the public, and hundreds of researchers access our documents each year to review original material for dissertations, journal articles, books, television shows, videos, movies, and genealogical projects.

The Personal Papers Collection is continuously growing; and contrary to popular belief, it is not limited to exceptionally distinguished Marines. All Marines are encouraged to donate their personal papers to the Archives collection.

Our current online collections:

Lt. Gen. James C. Breckinridge      Gen. Thomas Holcomb
Maj. Gen. Smedley D. Butler Gen. O. P. Smith
Gen. Graves B. Erskine Col. Gerald H. Turley
