Library Policies and Services

ABOUT THE LIBRARY OF THE MARINE CORPS (LOMC)
The Library of the Marine Corps is the premier academic research library within the U.S. Marine Corps. It directly supports the colleges and schools of the Marine Corps University as well as the research of Marines and scholars interested in studying the U.S. Marine Corps worldwide. It consists of 3 Branches: the USMC Research Library, the Quantico Base Library and the Virtual Library.

VISITOR INFORMATION
The Library of the Marine Corps is a partial government repository. As such, anyone is welcome to visit and use Library and archival collections on site, but only registered patrons can borrow materials. The LoMC branches are located within the Gen. Alfred M. Gray Marine Corps Research Center (GRC). Parking is available in the garage across the street from the GRC building.

HOURS OF OPERATION
The LoMC and its Branches are open according to the times listed on their respective home pages. They closed on all Federal holidays. Unscheduled closings due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances will be posted at the front entrances to the GRC, on individual Branch websites, and social media outlets (Facebook and Twitter).

DATABASES

USMC Research Library
The USMC Research Library subscribes to numerous online databases to assist patrons in conducting research. These databases are more specific in scope and more research-oriented than those provided by the Quantico Base Library.

Most of the databases are available to USMC active duty servicemembers, families, retirees, and Quantico civil service members. Some databases may have licensing and access restrictions. Database descriptions and access information is available on our databases page and A to Z Resource List.

For information and assistance, including instruction, usernames and passwords, contact the USMC Research Library Reference Staff at (703) 784-4411.

QUANTICO BASE LIBRARY
The Quantico Base Library provides a variety of online databases for educational, research, and recreational use by authorized Library patrons. Base Library databases are more "public library" in nature than those provided by the USMC Research Library.

Most databases are provided by MCCS Libraries and are also available at all other Marine Corps base libraries. Some databases may have licensing or access restrictions. Database descriptions and access information is available on the Base Library databases page.

For information and assistance, including instruction, usernames and passwords, contact the Base Library circulation desk at (703) 784-4348.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL)
The ILL system is an agreement between libraries to share materials. For registered borrowers, the LoMC ILL Clerk will attempt to find and borrow from other libraries materials not available in our Library collections. The process usually takes 5-10 days, sometimes longer. Lending libraries determine the length of the loan, which is usually 2-3 weeks.

ILL request forms are available at the Reference Desk. There is no charge for this service. If you are not a registered patron but would like to borrow from our collection, you may submit a request for an interlibrary loan through your local library.

INTERNET ACCESS / WI-FI
Wired and wireless Internet access is provided throughout the library. Wireless access is provided by MCCS. Please note that the quality of the wireless signal depends on where you are sitting in the building and the possibly the condition or quality of your computer equipment.

Headphones for Internet use are available at the Circulation Desk for on site use only. A form of ID, such as a driver's license or CAC, must be left at the Circulation Desk in order to check out headphones. Please remember to return your headphones and retrieve your ID before leaving the Library.

The GRC IT staff is not authorized to assist individuals with troubleshooting their personal electronic equipment.

Patrons are not authorized to connect their personal electronic equipment to wired internet access. You must use the WiFi connection.

LOST AND FOUND
Many notebooks, ID cards, keys, covers and glasses are forgotten and found daily in the Library. Please contact a Library Staff member if you suspect you forgot an item. We make every attempt to notify patrons who forget their Military ID or Library cards. Unclaimed Military IDs are returned to the DEERS office to be destroyed. Other unclaimed items are disposed of after 90 days.

MARINE CORPS READING LIST
Marine Corps Reading List materials are located on the second deck of the USMC Research Library. All titles, including audio tapes, CDs and Playaways, are located here. Some reading list titles are also available online - please check the Reading List Guide for details.

Multiple copies of most Reading List books are available for registered users to borrow in various formats: print, portable Playaway, CD. If you are a Marine not located at Quantico, your base library should have copies that you can borrow.

We do not lend our USMC Reading List titles to other libraries, nor can we purchase copies for units.

STUDY ROOMS
The USMC Research Library offers two study rooms on the first deck that are available during library operating hours, on a first-come, first-served basis.

To reserve other conference rooms in the GRC, contact the GRC Administrative Office and consult the GRC FAQs page. Circulation Desk Staff are not authorized to open any meeting rooms other than Rooms 144 and 145.
